John Minhinick, our retired Chair, was awarded the British Empire Medal in the New Year's Honors List and was proud to receive the presentation of his British Empire Medal from the King’s representative, the Lord Lieutenant, Robert Balfour at the official presentation ceremony in the Town House, Kirkcaldy.

There were three other recipients of this award on the day and all of them were most deserving through their hard work, drive and their determination to serve their local communities. John was, of course, no exception.

It was a very proud moment for the members of his family, his friends and his Parkinson’s colleagues.

The talk on the 10th April by Dr James Woods, Gillian Aldrich and some of the NHS team in Fife, supported by Parkinson's staff and a representative from Fife Sport and Leisure Trust was hailed by all to have been a great success.

The Tenpin Bowlers took two lanes at the Hollywood Bowl in Dunfermline on Tuesday 20th February. I'm not sure whether it was a record turnout, but with nine people taking part and one spectator we ended up booking two lanes. The scores were not the highest that we've seen and it's definitely the taking part that counts because everyone enjoyed themselves. 

We meet once a month (excluding school holidays) on the third Tuesday of the month. For more details

It was a good evening when the YP group got together at a local Indian restaurant in Glenrothes.

The food was great and the conversation was better with everyone catching up on each other's news, Parkinson's related or not.

A Blast From The Past

Members of the Branch, along with guests from our sister Branch in Edinburgh, enjoyed a very informative morning at the National Rail Signalman Training Centre at Newtongrange, near Dalkieth.

Our group was invited and made most welcome by Michael Jefferson, whose mother, Roma is an active member of the Branch.

The morning started off with a hot drink and chocolate biscuits (always a good icebreaker) while Michael told us all about the roles and responsibilities of a signalman. There’s more to it than you would expect, with Michael likening it to two-dimensional air traffic control. Their role is primarily safety but they have to deal with every eventuality that can occur on the rails, from a driverless train unable to leave the platform to animals on the line and fatal accidents.

After Michael’s presentation we were given the chance to virtually control all of the trains departing, arriving and transiting through Waverly station. Mark managed to close the station down within about five minutes, but considering “a stopped train is a safe train” his safety record was exemplary, although customer satisfaction would have been nil.

Signaler Training: A Day Out

Thanks to everyone who joined in and made our day out on the Union Canal with the Seagull Trust so enjoyable. There were so many of us that we needed two boats. The first with Admiral John Minhinick on board and the second with Vice-Admiral Mark Coxe.We were well looked after by the team of volunteers and treated to tea and biscuits on both the outward and homeward legs of the voyage. Needless to say, that the Vice-Admiral’s boat got back to base first, giving some of us time for a crafty shandy before the Admiral’s safe return.

Cruising on the Union Canal

I was invited to give a presentation about Parkinson’s and the work of the Fife Branch to a local Masonic Lodge the other week.

St Fothad in Bowhill had raised a considerable sum and following the talk, the Master of the Lodge, William Miller, presented a sizeable cheque to me for the Fife Branch. Not only that but the Chair of the Bowhill Highland Games presented a cheque from the money raised from a tombola stall at the Bowhill Village fair and the Bowhill Highland Games. Not to be outdone the representatives of the Widows Son Motorcycle Club also presented the Branch with a donation.

As in previous talks I slotted in some Parkinson’s poetry from my books, which helped to explain life with the condition in an entertaining way. It also resulted in me selling the books on the night with all profits being split between the Branch and the main charity.

My thanks go to William Miller, the members of his Lodge, the Bowhill Highland Games committee and the Widows Sons motorcycling masons.

Everyone had a brilliant time at the Fife Branch Winter Ceilidh and I don't think that too many toes were stepped on by the dancers 'jigging away' to the fine accordion music provided by Bernie Hewitt.
